Helping our Veterans
LiLou’s Story11038740_963019037064550_7609129640772154651_n
The Vets Animal Hospital is proud to say that we support our troops! We recently met a veteran named Michael Shelswell, a combat disabled soldier. Michael served in the Army for 11 years and is now 100% medically retired. While serving he earned 2 purple hearts, 2 bronze stars with valor, a bronze star for service, and many more medals for his service to our country. Unfortunately, like many of our soldiers coming home, he suffers from severe PTSD and TBI (traumatic brain injury). Michael and his wife made the decision to get a service dog to support Michael in his daily life.

LiLou is a Cane Corso. She is being trained as a PTSD Service Dog with the help of Michael’s two trainers, Matt Wilson and Jumoke Johnson of Alpha Fit K9, in Colorado Springs, CO. With the help of Karen Gayer, who is part of an organization called Cody’s Cause(named after her son Cody who was also a soldier who suffered from PTSD and was not able to get the help that he needed) they were able to purchase LiLou. LiLou will be trained to help with Michael’s symptoms such as nightmares, anxiety and depression, just to name a few. She will also be trained as a protection dog to help him with the social anxiety he has when out in public.

The Vets Animal Hospital knows how important it is to give back to our country and community and thank our soldiers for what they do. We will be donating the necessary services to make sure that LiLou receives the proper medical care she needs to remain healthy and assist Michael on his journey. We are proud to be sponsoring this great team and look forward to watching the two of them grow together.

We are also proud to say that we offer a military discount (valid military ID required) to any of our veterans!
